Keyless Relay Attacks in 2026: Why Entry-Level OEM Security Isn't Enough
How £30 relay kits are still beating factory keyless systems — and why a CAN-bus immobiliser remains the only physical barrier in 2026.

Relay attacks aren't going away
Every modern keyless car talks to its fob over short-range radio. A £30 amplifier placed outside your front door picks up the fob's I'm here signal and forwards it through a second device held next to your car on the drive. To the car, the legitimate fob is right there. The doors unlock, the START button works, and the car is gone in 30 seconds.
After eight years of headlines, manufacturers have shipped motion-sensor fobs that sleep when stationary, and UWB (ultra-wideband) keyless that measures distance more precisely than RSSI. Both reduce attacks. Neither closes the gap. Criminals have moved on to CAN-bus injection — bypassing the key entirely by splicing into the diagnostic port behind the bumper.
Why the OEM alarm doesn't help
OEM alarms are detection devices. They sound when the cabin is breached. A relay or CAN-bus attack doesn't breach the cabin — it impersonates the key. The alarm never trips. CCTV captures the car being reversed off the drive in near silence.
A tracker is post-theft recovery — useful, but it presupposes the theft has already happened. Recovery rates on trackers are good (often 90%+ within 24h), but you're still paying for a damaged or written-off vehicle being recovered from a lockup.
What actually stops the theft
The Ghost II is a prevention device. It sits on the CAN-bus between the ignition and the engine management system. Even with the key valid, the car won't crank until a personal PIN sequence is entered using the steering wheel buttons and the existing dashboard controls. No software tool can bypass it; the bypass requires physically removing the Ghost module — which takes a thief longer than the value of the vehicle justifies.
This is the only class of product that stops the theft before it starts. Detection and recovery both happen too late.
