Why Range Rover Owners Need a Ghost Immobiliser — A West Midlands Driver's Guide
Range Rover sits at the top of the UK theft risk table for the sixth consecutive year. Here's what the Ghost does that the factory system can't.

Range Rover is the UK's #1 theft target
Thatcham's 2025 vehicle theft index placed Land Rover / Range Rover products at the top of the UK theft risk table for the sixth consecutive year. The Range Rover Sport, Velar, Evoque and full-fat Autobiography all appear. Insurance premiums reflect this — many underwriters now require a TASSA-verified immobiliser as a condition of cover.
The reason is engineering, not coincidence: JLR vehicles have a long, well-documented CAN-bus architecture. Once a thief knows the diagnostic port locations and the CAN-bus handshake, the same trick works across the entire range. Tools that bypass the JLR immobiliser are circulating widely within criminal networks.
The Ghost's role on a Range Rover
The Ghost II sits on the same CAN-bus that the thief is banking on. The factory keyless handshake still works — but the engine management system now expects a PIN before it agrees to crank. The thief's tool cannot enter a PIN sequence it doesn't know, and the module has no antenna to relay, no fob to clone.
For JLR vehicles built from April 2025 (Discovery Sport, Range Rover Sport L460, Velar, Evoque L551), the Ghost II PRO supersedes the standard Ghost II. PRO adds an encrypted rolling-code authentication, preventing the cloned-ECU attack vector that surfaced in early 2026.
TASSA certification — what your insurer needs
TASSA verification is the standard your insurance underwriter will ask for. Thatcham does not rate the Ghost (it falls outside the Thatcham Category framework). Any installer who describes the Ghost as Thatcham approved is misrepresenting the product — we never do.
The TASSA installation certificate we email you the same day is what you forward to your insurer. It's recognised by Toyota Insurance Services and most prestige specialist underwriters.
